These tools were used extensively in ancient Egypt and Rome \u2013 primarily in forging workshops. Alongside the hammer, anvil and forge, pliers were part of the insignia of the Roman god Vulcan. He was worshipped by smiths and metal workers. Jointed pliers have been known in Europe since ca. 1000 BC. The word pliers is derived from the 16th cent. French word &#8216;ply&#8217; (bend), which in turn is derived from the Latin &#8216;plicare&#8217; &#8211; to fold.\n\nA set of pliers comprises two handles. The mating gripper jaws or cutters are used to work the workpiece or to hold it in place.\n\nPliers are made from unalloyed or alloyed (tool) steel. In the case if simple pliers, steel with a carbon content of 0.45% is used. For high quality, heavy-duty pliers, steel with a higher carbon content is used. Pliers operate on the basis of the lever principle. The joint forms a moveable link between two double-sided levers. In doing so the material remains tough.<\/p><p>The surface characteristics can be influenced through heat treatment and the use of coating and alloying elements.
